Wooden pianos and grands

Wood represents a good life cycle assessment as a growing raw material, sustainable and environmentally friendly. Each kind of wood has its own characteristic, i.e. mahogany can spread fine elegance by its even grain, whereas walnut can be regarded simply by its vivid, shining veneers as a unique piece of art. Wooden pianos are classified in solid wood or veneered pianos. Spruce, alder and oak wood is usually used for solid wood pianos, lateron waxed and oiled as a natural material for the ecologically cognisant piano enthusiasts. Lumbercore-plywood or MDF serve as a basis of veneered pianos. The diverse kind of veneers vary a lot, as they can even vary in themselves. In the 70s and 80s of last century mostly oak and walnut were used in piano manufacture followed by mahogany and spruce. Today materials used follow the latest furniture trends. Veneers are protected by a thin top layer made of nitro or polyurethane finish or more seldom polyester which quickly looks greasy due to the thick layer. If you decide yourself for a wooden instrument, you normally would like to differ from mainstream or appreciate its warmth and use its diverse expression facilities.
